The Code of Practice for Support Workers
This updated Code of Practice builds on the original Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers, published in 2009. It was created in partnership with staff from different roles and sectors across health and care. The Code draws on recognised standards and reflects the evolving responsibilities of the support workforce.
While a Code of Conduct focuses on how you should behave, a Code of Practice focuses on how you should carry out your role safely and well. This Code of Practice is designed to be supportive and practical, helping staff reflect on their work, build skills, and uphold shared values. This helps ensure safe, high-quality care for everyone.
The Code is based on the NHS Scotland Values:
These values shape how we work with people who use our services, their families, and our colleagues. They guide everyday decisions and behaviours so that care remains person-centred and respectful.
