Who the Code applies to

This Code applies to all staff who are not statutorily regulated and who work in NHS health services in Scotland, regardless of role or setting.  The Code is an important part of Scotland’s promise to have a workforce that is trusted, skilled, and confident. It helps make sure care is safe, effective, and compassionate every day.

The examples below show different areas and settings where people who come under the umbrella term Support Worker may work and need to follow the Code of Practice. This is not a full list, but it gives guidance to help you think about how your own role and responsibilities fit with the Code.

Clinical and medical support services:


  • Dental Services
  • Medical Services
  • Operating Department Services (supporting surgery)
  • Optometry Services (eye care)
  • Pharmaceutical Services in Hospitals

 

Therapeutic and psychological services:


  • Complementary and Alternative Therapies (e.g., massage, acupuncture)
  • Play Therapy Services
  • Psychology Services

 

Preventive and public health services:


  • Health Promotion and Sexual Health Services
  • Health Associated Infection/Infection Control Services
  • Genetic Counselling Services

 

Scientific and diagnostic services:


  • Diagnostic Services
  • Healthcare Science and Laboratory Services (testing and analysis)

 

Spiritual services:


  • Chaplaincy Services (spiritual support)
  • Personal and social care services

 

Operational and infrastructure services:

Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Profession services (NMAHP services):
